nothing is permanent: panoramic images of chicago : about
The project Nothing is Permanent: Panoramic Images of Chicago was brought about by an ongoing theme in my work: a desire to look at the city through the context of time and constant change. The structures we conduct our lives in and around on a daily basis may appear dense and solid at surface level, but like anything in life, they are mutable, tenuous and fragile. They are in a perpetual state of evolution. It's not uncommon to find the steel beams of a construction site positioned in close proximity to the crumbling bricks and peeling paint of a historical building. Construction cranes are visible from almost every vantage point in downtown Chicago, a persistent reminder that we are in the midst of a notable moment of rapid change. I chose the panoramic format for its sweeping views and unique ability to render a multitude of potentially disparate elements in focus. I explored the city, traveling from ground level construction sites to the tops of parking garages seeking out unusual and insightful perspectives. Each panorama is made up of 10 to 15 individual photographs that have been digitally composited into larger images, cross sections of a transitioning Chicago. |
